Baking cakes was never my forte. The end results never quite looked like the visions I had in my head and the desperate mess of leftover baking ingredients was equally disheartening. And then out of the blue, a random thought struck me: There was no rule stating that I had to bake cakes from scratch. There were perfectly acceptable cake mixes in the baking aisle and if I changed my level of engagement, I could put a cake on the table that was both edible and presentable. The added joy was that I finally started baking birthday cakes with my children. As it turns out, they really did not care that the cakes we made together started off as cake mixes from boxes.
In keeping with the baking theme, I believe there are three levels of engagement for activities:
- Engagement Level 1: Made-from-scratch cake
- Engagement Level 2: Cake-mix-in-a-box cake
- Engagement Level 3: Store-bought cake
Productivity tip: All tasks are not created equal. Choose to spend the majority of your energy and effort on activities that deserve your full level of engagement and use shortcuts to save you time and your sanity on the rest.
