Email apnea is “Shallow breathing or breath holding while doing email, or while working or playing in front of a screen.” and according to Linda Stone who coined the term, email apnea:
- increases stress levels
- impacts our attitude
- affects our sense of emotional well-being
- influences our ability to work effectively.
In her book Thrive, Arianna Huffington notes that while email apnea might sound trivial, it isn’t. The body’s balance of oxygen, nitric oxide, and carbon dioxide get out of balance when the body’s breathing pattern is disrupted, which can in turn, play a role in exacerbating stress-related conditions. Now think about how many times a day you check your email.
Health and productivity tip
Remember to breathe the next time you check your email or wait for your Facebook page to load.
