I recently helped a teacher find an organizing solution for her class.
Problem: The first graders were constantly losing items in their desks.
Investigation and findings: The desks have wide storage “mouths” with no divisions. Things shift around and get lost at the back of the desks.
Recommendation: Find a pull-out drawer with compartments.
Product solution: The IKEA Skubb.
- I measured the height, length, and width of the desk storage area.
- I took photos and measured all the items.
- I headed off to IKEA to find a moveable drawer with compartments. While the overall dimensions of the Skubb worked well and it had a little handle, the compartment divisions were not quite right. However, on further investigation, I realized I could create appropriately sized compartments by cutting out some of the panels without affecting the integrity of the drawer’s structure. Books, folders, and other paperwork fit into the large compartment while smaller items are contained in their own compartments.
If your child is struggling to keep his desk organized at home, try the Skubb or similar organizing drawer.
